Australia ( / ə ˈ s t r eɪ l j ə / ə-STRAYL-yə or / ɒ ˈ s t r eɪ l j ə / o-STRAYL-yə, or / ɔː ˈ s t r eɪ l i ə / aw-STRAY-lee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the northeast and New Zealand to the southeast.

For at least 40,000 years before European settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who belonged to one or more of the roughly 250 language groups. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north and discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored and an additional five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established during the 19th century.

On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and is a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory.

A prosperous developed country, Australia is the world's thirteenth largest economy. Australia ranks highly in many international comparisons of national performance such as human development, quality of life, health care, life expectancy, public education, economic freedom and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australia is a member of the United Nations, G20, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, OECD, APEC, Pacific Islands Forum and the World Trade Organization.

What American first arrived in Australia after Australia was settled in 1788?
Q. Did this person intend to live in Australia? Did they perhaps jump ship? I expect this person arrived prior to 1800. In 1802 Americans were on Kangaroo Island whaling and building a boat that took them to Sydney. These are the first Americans I know of. The three officers with Cook in 1770 were not Americans as they were before the declaration of independence, 1776.

How does someone get a work visa to Australia?
Q. My son is a nuclear medical technician who would like to relocate to the Melbourne, Australia area. Yep, there is a woman involved. He must pass the board exam to be hired. To do that he needs to be able to study in Australia. To do that he'll need to work to support himself while he studies. Anyone got any ideas for how he can get a sponsor or other help about moving to Australia?

A. There is only one Nuclear Medicine course in Victoria - at RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology). The only other courses even vaguely in the area are at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, or Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. They might allow your son to study from abroad, so that he can do the exam as soon as he gets here. Most of the major public hospitals in Melbourne have Nuclear Medicine departments, and there are quite a few in private practices, such as Lake Imaging, MIA, Goulburn Valley Nuclear Medicine and Murray Valley Imaging. I work as a radiographer, and we had someone at my work in a similar position last year - he worked as a receptionist for our practice while he worked through the necessary… [cont.]

A. There is more than just quarantine to think about. There is quite a detailed procedure involving titres, etc. I am in the process of starting a puppy on the protocols to go to Australia. I'll go find my link and edit it in. However, if all the protocols are followed the quarantine is a minimum of 30 days.
