Etymology

From Anglo-Norman Espayne, from Late Latin Spania, from earlier Latin Hispānia, from Ancient Greek Ἱσπανια (Hispania), from Phoenician i-shaphanim, literally 'hyrax isle', as the native wild rabbits were mistaken for hyraxes.
