What are some good Business Associations for a Student?
Q. I'm a Business Administration undergraduate student with a concentration in Finance. What are some of the best professional business associations that I can join? Does being a member with these associations help with school admissions (I'm thinking about transferring) and resume building?

A. Institute of Management Accountants - society for corporate accounting, finance, and IT professionals. You can join as a student and then transition to a regular member once you graduate. www.imanet.org

Should homeowners in associations band together to lobby the legislature to protect us from sick HOA boards?
Q. HOA and Condo lawyers have formed their own lobbying group, the Community Associations Institute, to stop any laws that protect homeowners from the crazy conduct of sick HOA boards. HOAs do not protect our property values, in fact they can take our home for fees or fines they can invent.

A. While I agree that there are problems with some HOA Boards, the bigger problem, in my opinion, is owners who buy without any idea of what an HOA is, or what their rights are. When you buy a home in a covenant controlled community, your ownership rights are limited. Those limits are clearly defined in the legal documents that many or most people don't bother to read. Living in a covenant controlled community is a trade-off. You give up some of your rights as an individual to do whatever you want with your property, and in return, you gain some measure of control or predictability over what your neighbors can do. What associations offer group health insurance?
Q. Hi! I am trying to find health insurance at group rates. I would like to be an independent insurance agent. Does anyone know of any kind of associations or anything that I could join to have access to group health insurance? (I live in Alabama)

A. Assocations used to do group coverage, but it didn't work out - the only people who joined were the ones that couldn't get private insurance cheaper - in other words, the really unhealthy ones. The rates got really really high, and more people dropped out, etc. Bad spiral. So you can't join an association to get a "group" rate. The association health policies are STILL all individually underwritten and rated. Being an insurance agent is different. NO ONE is going to give you an appointment, if you're green. You'll have to go on under another agent, or work directly for a carrier. Go to your state insurance department website for information.
