A language school is a school where one studies a foreign language. Classes at a language school are usually geared towards, but not limited to, communicative competence in a foreign language. Language learning in such schools typically supplements formal education or existing knowledge of a foreign language.

Students vary widely by age, educational background, work experience, and language proficiency.

Structure

As a general rule, new students take a placement test which enables teachers to determine which is the most appropriate level for the student. Courses can be organized in groups or for individuals (one-to-one lessons). These language schools, generally open all year round, are equipped with pedagogical material (books, tape recorders, videos, language laboratories, a library, etc).

Business

Most language schools are private and for-profit. Fees vary depending on demand for the language in the area where a school is located. Language schools are either independent entities or corporate franchises.

Cheap Language schools in Belgium or Spain?
Q. Hi, I want to study in Europe. So, I'm interested to study language in either Belgium or Spain. Any recommendation for cheap language schools in Belgium or Spain?

A. Both the VUB and the ULB in Brussels run langauge courses (French/Dutch + some others) which are pretty cheap. These classes run in the evenings and last for a year - so not sure if this is exactly the format or duration you're looking for. There are lots of private language schools in Brussels which are usually more expensive than the universities, but they will offer a wider range of formats/durations. Berlitz and Alliance Francais are both very well known, although it's worth shopping around and looking at the smaller ones too (Amira, Thema Lingua etc). It's also worthwhile checking and asking on some local expat forums since there will usually be people there who have studied at local schools - bruxpats.com and xpats.be for… [cont.]

Why are all spanish language schools so bad?
Q. Are there any schools in MX or S. America that focus solely on learning Spanish, like 40+ hours per week. With one on one tutor style teaching. Are there any schools that dont waste time on salsa lessons and surfing. -Also any schools with nice hotel right next door. I do not want to do homestay.

A. I recommend the Ixchel Spanish School in Antigua, Guatemala. I did one-to-one classes there for a month for 6 hours/day about two years ago. They were phenominal - the setting of the school is very comfortable and the instructors were excellent. While they can recommend salsa classes and help with travel arrangements, that's just an extra service for those students who want to get involved and meet more people. The school can also recommend a hotel if you don't want to do a homestay. However, I found that doing a homestay was a great - i stayed in a beautiful home only a five minute walk from the school. there were other people (mostly late 20s/early 30s professionals in grad school or on holiday) staying in the house, but you… [cont.]

if i were a navy seal; what language schools if any would i need to attend?
Q. such as...a second language school, either before or after BUD's? would i need it to be a seal? are seals not a special force?
Asked by SRG - Thu Jun 26 21:37:55 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. To become a Navy SEAL, proficiency in a second language IS NOT required, but students are encouraged to learn a foreign language to aid them in whichever part of the world their Team may work in, it is also an easy way to earn more money with a Foreign language bonus which can at times be around $1,000 extra a month. If a student were to take a foreign language class, it would most likely happen during the work-up for that SEAL(basically months after graduating BUD/S.) By the way, knowing a second language in the Army Special Forces is also NOT required but encouraged and taught to you. Good luck.
